Porbandar, India, 1983

The onset of the monsoon or the rainy season is one of the most dramatic times in India. The monsoon either brings too much rain or not enough rain. It is either drought or flooding. I happen to be in the town of Porbandar on the coast of Gujarat, and I saw this man walking down the street with a sewing machine on his shoulder. His shop had been flooded and it was a total loss, except he was able to get his rusted sewing machine. This picture ended up on the cover of National Geographic and the people who manufactured that machine tracked this man down, found him, and sent him a new sewing machine so that he could start a new life. It was wonderful for me to be able to help this man, to be able to give back to him, and to make his life better.
