Chiang Mai, Thailand, 2010

Elephants are spread over different parts of Asia, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Burma, Cambodia, Thailand… This particular elephant was up in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. One morning, I was photographing his handler reading a book, and the baby elephant came over to where he was sitting on this stone and started to rub his shoulder on this enormous rock. I was amused because it looked to me as though the elephant was peering over the handler's shoulder and reading along with the book. One of the great things about photography is that you can come back to an image time and time again. This frozen moment in time allows you to come back over and over again. In time, what kind of burns into your psyche and hopefully if it's a good picture, it's one that you'll never forget. And I think that's the mark of a good photograph, is one that stays with you, one that you learn from, one that changes you in some ways, and something that you will always remember.
