Bombay, India, 1993

Bombay has some of the largest slums in the world. One afternoon, I was driving through the monsoon rain and I came into a red light. This mother and child came into my window looking in, hoping that I would give them some charity, some help. I raised my camera and I took two exposures. I took two pictures. After the second picture the light changed and my driver speed off. Looking back, this picture to me is symbolic of the haves and the have-nots. Here I am, this rich foreigner in my air conditioned taxi in this cocoon, listening to music. On the outside, during this heavy monsoon rain, this mother and her child coming to my car window, hoping for some charity, hoping for some help. Instead, the light changes and off we went.
