Mandalay, Burma, 1994

This is the Mingun pagoda near Mandalay in Burma. It’s the largest pagoda ever made, but it was never finished. One day, an astrologist said ‘when this pagoda is finished, then the king will die shortly thereafter’, so they stopped work on it because nobody wanted the king to die. Some hundreds of years later it was built on an earthquake zone. An earthquake came and created these huge enormous fissures which give it this real character.

Looking at the photograph, it almost looks like it is a cliff face, a rock face, but in fact these are millions of small bricks that make up the facade of this enormous pagoda. Next door to the pagoda is the world's largest bell. I love to visit the bell as well because it has all this really fascinating graffiti over the last 100 years inside the bell.
