Angkor, Cambodia, 1999

This photograph of monks walking silently through the rain is one of my favorite places in the world. It's Angkor Wat, and it's the largest temple complex of any place in the world. As a Hindu place of worship, all of the reliefs and all the sculptures, all the statues hearken back to Hindu mythology. One morning I was walking around Angkor Wat, while this heavy rain broke out and all the tourists ran for cover. Normally, this area is packed with pilgrims and tourists and people, but everybody is scattered and these monks were walking silently alone in this heavy downpour down this causeway. I love the fact that the shape of the monks, and the shape of the spires in the background of the temple have a nice relationship that works well together.
