Kabul, Afghanistan, 1993

I made this picture of this young Hazara boy in Kabul when the entire city was in rubble after 10 years of civil war. Hazara came from Central Asia. They can trace their ancestry back to Genghis Khan, and they look more Chinese than they do Afghan, but they belong to the Shia sect of Islam and they are looked down upon by the rest of the Afghans. They become this minority group that end up doing menial jobs and jobs and nobody else wants to do. They’ve had a very difficult time trying to get equal rights and get respect from the rest of the Afghans. Therefore, in this case, this young boy has been assigned to protect his neighborhood and he is standing as a sentry.
