Band-I-Amir, Afghanistan, 2002

So much photography is about waiting and anticipation, and having a mental image, having almost a preconceived or previsualization of what kind of picture you are hoping or you anticipate to make. One afternoon I was driving through Band-I-Amir Lake District, and I saw these two natural stone formations which really reminded me hearken back to the World Trade Center. There have to be some shepherds nearby with their animals, so I went back several times, photographed them in the early morning light around sunrise, went back in the late afternoon. Eventually one small cult, one small horse sort of dashed through my frame, and it created this wonderful picture of these two natural stone formations along with this horse, kind of giving a nice piece of action to complete the picture.
